I have a love for covers, along with a love for the classic doowop sound of the fifties and sixties, so when German band The Baseballs put both together, it was a perfect storm of love for my ears.
While you could technically call them covers, there’s much more to it than that. The Baseballs take contemporary hits (such as Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” and Katy Perry’s “Hot n Cold”) and rearrange them from scratch, as if they were really living in the fifties. Combined with a complete rockabilly look and the lead singer’s penchant for sounding like Elvis, it’s as if a wormhole opened up and dropped these guys on us. For which I’m so glad.
