Wow, That's a Good Song: Cee Lo Green, "Fuck You"
But this is the catchiest go-to-hell song that I've heard in just about forever. The video's just the lyrics, but even that is done in a way that's pretty eye catching.
Wow, That's a Good Song: Retribution Gospel Choir, "Hide It Away"
Retribution Gospel Choir's sophomore album, appropriately titled 2, is already an early frontrunner to make it onto my Favorites of 2010 list. "Hide it Away" kicks the album off, and it's a perfect start -- it grabbed my attention and still manages to suck me in for the rest of the tracks.
Hooray for Covers! Hugo, "99 Problems"
How to make Jay-Z's iconic "99 Problems" even better? Why, by adding banjos and a really really freaky video, that's how.
This Just In…
Tik Tok and California Gurls are the same song. In other news, water is wet.
Wow, That's a Good Song: Meursault, "A Small Stretch of Land"
Where has Meursault been all of my life? Singer Neil Pennycook's voice is positively haunting. I'm apparently late to this party, but Love Shack, Baby has written about Meursault several times, in much more depth than I can muster, including a review of their latest album, "All Creatures Will Make Merry".
Happy Fourth of July
Happy Fourth of July, to my fellow US-types, from both the Muppets and me.
Wow, That's a Good Song: Dessa, "Dixon's Girl"
Dessa is part of the Doomtree collective, which is a hip-hop collective out of Minneapolis, which means that if you're not a hip-hop fan, you may be familiar with her. But you should, because her music transcends what you may typically think of as hip-hop.
Wow, That's a Good Song: Chris Pierce, "What Are The Chances?"
Wow, That's a Good Song: Chris Pierce, "What Are The Chances?"
Wow, That's a Good Song: Johnny Flynn, "Kentucky Pill"
"Kentucky Pill" is the first single off of his new album, Been Listening. He comes from the same school of new British folk artists like Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons, and Noah and the Whale, so you should definitely love him and his music.
Hooray for Covers! Jocelyn Scofield, "Speechless"
Jocelyn Scofield's one of those gems who has put out a handful of solid covers and is now forging a career for herself with original music. Check out her understated yet powerful cover of Lady Gaga's "Speechless".
Wow, That's a Good Song: The Low Anthem, "Charlie Darwin"
The Low Anthem's album Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, came out in 2009 (2008, if you count the album's self-release), but I've only recently discovered it, and now I'm wondering how I managed to miss out on this album for almost a year. This is "Charlie Darwin", the track which kicks off the whole album, which is sad and gorgeous and haunting.
Mumford & Sons at WXRT
While I'm finishing my show writeup (spoiler alert: AWESOME), have this clip of Mumford & Sons performing "The Cave" at Chicago's WXRT.
